Coughton is a small village 3 miles from Studley, 2 miles from Alcester and 10 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon. The village is dominated by Coughton Court, now owned by the National Trust, which was the family home of theThrockmorton family for 600 years. Bessie Throckmorton, maid of honour to Elizabeth I secretly married Sir Walter Raleigh in 1592, and this led to their both being sent to the Tower. Later the family was involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1602 in that they were closely linked with some of the conspirators.
